Time zones — key concepts
UTC / GMT
UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) is the global reference standard. GMT is practically identical. All time zones are expressed as offsets from UTC (e.g. UTC+2, UTC-5).
DST
Daylight Saving Time (DST) moves clocks 1 hour forward in spring in many countries. This tool automatically calculates DST for each zone.
International meetings
To schedule a meeting with participants in different countries, use the multi-zone comparator to find a slot during business hours for everyone.
IANA
Time zones use the IANA database (e.g. Europe/London, America/New_York) which automatically handles legal time changes country by country.
FAQ
UTC and GMT are practically identical in everyday use. The technical difference is that UTC is based on atomic clocks (TAI) with leap seconds, while GMT is based on Earth's rotation. For most purposes, they are interchangeable.
Some countries adopted non-integer offsets for historical or geographical reasons. India (UTC+5:30), Nepal (UTC+5:45), Iran (UTC+3:30) and Central Australia (UTC+9:30) are examples.
